2 Dead, 23 Injured As Mini-Bus Falls Into A Ravine

Maasin City, Southern Leyte-Two passengers were dead and 23 others were injured when a mini-bus loaded with 25 passengers and 4,000 plus kilos of copra fell into a ravine near a curved road in the hinterland barangay of Sta.Cruz,this city, during the recently Tuesday.
The mini-bus with plate no.HAH-975 owned by a well-known businessman Honorato ”Orat” Paloma was driven by Apolonio Mijares Paloma,45 years old ,married. He was a resident of another hinterland barangay of San Agustin and also a Barangay Kagawad.
In an investigation conducted by SP04 Generoso Guerra, Jr., head of the police substation in brgy.San Rafael (Bantig), the driver said that they came from brgy. Libertad.He said that the mini-bus was loaded with 25 passengers from different barangays on the way to Sta.Cruz.
Upon reaching the curved road in brgy.Sta.Cruz, he heard a big impact underneath the vehicle. As he applied a break and tried to maneuver the drivewheel, he said, it stopped functioning. The, mini-bus he said, had just uncontrollably rolled down and fell into a treeless cliff, that could possibly prevent a fatal fall if they were planted and have grown there along the road.
Some passengers however said that the vehicle was overloaded. But the driver reasoned out that the mini-bus has a 7 tons capacity.”Aduna lay 25 ka pasahero ug upat ka libo ka kilo kapin nga kopras, busa dili nato maingon nga overloaded ang maong sakyanan,”he said in Cebuano.(It has only 25 passengers and 4,000 plus kilos of copra, so we cannot say that the mini-bus was overloaded.).
Asked by the police how come he did not suffer serious injuries unlike most of his passengers, he revealed that he held on firmly to the drive wheel as it fell into the cliff, which is about 30 feet deep.
Nevertheless, his left leg was so painful, he said, when it struck somewhere inside as the bus rolled and touched the ground.
Driver Paloma also expressed his apology over the local radio station to the relatives of the victims, saying he felt very sorry for the accident.”Dili nako gusto ang nahitabo’, he said in Cebuano,” apan usahay ang aksidente dili gyud kalikayan”.(I did not like what had happened. But there were times that we cannot avoid an accident.) He has been a driver for ten years.
The driver was detained at San Rafael police substation. A case of reckless imprudence was filed by the police against him.
On the other hand, all victims of the vehicular accident were rushed to the provincial hospital for treatment. Injured passengers were suffering from either bone fractures, heavy and light injuries, swollen legs or arms or head injuries.

Operator Paloma and his family upon learning of the accident involving their vehicle went to the hospital to provide support and financial assistance to the victims’ medical prescriptions.
As of presstime, those with light and non-serious cases would be discharged from confinement. But those with serious cases would remain in their hospitalization for further treatment and observations.
The two fatalities were identified as: Anita Salapi Meneses, 52 years old, married of brgy. Libertad and Jeffrey Milagrosa Serito, Jr.,28 years old, married of brgy.San Agustin.

PAG-IBIG Fund Membership Is Now Mandatory-PAG-IBIG Officials

Maasin City, Southern Leyte-The PAG-IBIG Fund membership, which was optional during the past several years, is now mandatory as required by a new law thru Republic Act 9679 that was put into effect starting January 2010.
This was the disclosure from a PAG-IBIG official Jennylind L. Barreta, Chief Division Marketing and Enforcement during a meeting held at Supercha Restaurant here which was attended by various representatives from different government and private institutions-the Saint Joseph college, College of Maasin, Maasin Christian Academy, Rural Bank of Maasin, Greenbank,Maasin Water Disrict, Prestige International School, Baptist Church, Philippine Information Agency, the press, some cooperatives, among others.
Barreta told the attendees that house helpers and other lowly workers who are receiving a salary of at least P1,000.00 a month and above are mandated to register themselves to PAG-IBIG Fund by asking forms to the said office.
Likewise, all employees have now the obligations to register their employees to PAG-IGIG offices in every regions of the country and to give their counterpart to the employees’ PAG-IBG monthly contributions. For permanent PAG-IBIG IDs, Barreta said, membership registrants are now required to write their middle names in full, not initials only as it was done before. They must also get TIN numbers from the BIR. Employers who will not follow the new law will be penalized, she said.
A slide presentation was also done by PAG-IBIG’s moderator Ketchie Rex Barrañez where guidelines to the new law RA9679 were reflected in details for explanations and clarifications from the presenters.
The M&E Division Chief clarified that if an employee has a monthly salary of P1, 000 to P1, 500, his/her PAG-IBIG contribution is one percent and two percent counterpart for the employer. For bigger salary like P15, 000, deduction for the contribution is two percent while the employer’s counterpart is also two percent.
For P50, 000 monthly salaries, the contribution is P1, 000 and P2, 000 for the employer’s counterpart. From P5, 000 to P10, 000, the deduction for one’s contribution is P200 with a counterpart from the employer. There is no forfeitures on contributions, she said.
“It is the obligation of the employers to deduction their employees’ contributions to PAG-IBG with a due on every 10th day or before of every month”, she said.
Marketing Specialist Ernesto Amante pointed out that the advantage of being PAG-IBIG members is that their savings are tax-free and government-guaranteed, transferable to other office or offices where members have another jobs and housing loans.
However, he stressed that only those who were able to have contributions for at least 20 years are entitled to housing loans, multi-purpose loans and burial benefits of P6, 000. He also advised inactive members to reactivate their membership.
Amante further said that in places where there are housing loans from members, housing loans counseling will be conducted on schedule by the PAG-BIG personnel.
Open Forum
Some cases of foreclosure were brought up during an open forum by a print media practitioner.Engr. Palermo Talacay,Assistant Dept.Manager informed that their office will not just implement foreclosures to members who were unable to pay their loans, but series of notices and letters were sent to them before making final foreclosure s of their properties.
He said that there were those who responded to their letters/ notices and have made restructurings of their loan payments to give them time to save their properties.
Another official who conducted the forum underscored that job orders and contractual workers are also mandated to register themselves to PAG-IBG and make monthly contributions without the obligatory counterparts from their employers.
A broadcast media practitioner also strongly urged to PAG-IBG officials that RA 9679 must be strictly implemented now since some employers would not tell the exact numbers of their workers, thus reducing their counterpart obligations to his/her employees.
As to PAG-IBIG asset, Talacay divulged that it already reaches an estimated amount of almost P300B with membership of 7.39M.
Of the current asset, 30% were released for housing loans. One hundred six million (P106M) were released daily with a total of P49.2B for 300 families.
For her part, Barreta emphasized that PAG-IBG contributions are not insurance premiums but savings with 30% distributed to its members as tax-free dividend.
She further reminded those employers who feel some humps on their backs that, “the law is not a choice of the employees, but it’s a necessary mandatory by law, and a necessary obligation of the employers”.
Earlier, the PAG-0IBG Officials visited the City Hall to pay a courtesy call to Mayor Maloney Samaco.They expressed their intention to open a Services Desk in the City. Mayor Samaco positively responded to their plan and he offered a space at City Hall as their services Desk.

Maasin City, Southern Leyte-Maasin City, the capital of Southern Leyte province, has celebrated its 10th year Charter Day anniversary recently coupled with various Sports and other civil activities prior to the culmination day of the festivity with its theme “A decade of service, optism and victory”.
The activities involved were volleyball,billiards,night dances, special friends night, employees night, lawn and table tennis,badminton,cycling,dart,clergy concert,SK night,potpot race, cooperative night,agro-fair,Liga Ng Mga Barangay Night,SK night,qeen competition and awarding, concert at the park.
Former City Mayor Damian Mercado, now the incumbent Governor said in his speech that his slogan “Aksyon,Solusyon,Inisyatibo”(Action,Solution,Initiative) had worked effectively with the cooperation of the city officials to change the “face” of once-a-municipality of Maasin thru various infrastructure projects in the proper city and in different barangays under its jurisdiction.
Mercado said that he is thankful that former Vice-Mayor, now Mayor Maloney Samaco has continued his plan of improving the place, not only in business aspect but also in other programs beneficial to the city dwellers.
Tacloban Mayor Alfred S.Romualdez, the guest speaker, disclosed in his inspirational talk that when he was a Congressman he was one of those who co-authored for the cityhood of Maasin, which was principally authored by former Congressman Anecito Saludo,Jr.
Romualdez revealed that the people of Maasin might have not known that he and his wife are always visiting Maasin and the province to view the sceneries along its highways where the find peace and order, most particularly if they have visitors from Bacolod or Iloilo.
He claimed that while other big and beautiful cities were allegedly dying due to alleged fighting of some of its people, the people of Maasin are generally living in peace and order.
Nevertheless, with elected officials in authority have united, he said, there’s also the necessity of the people to unite themselves, and by this measure there’s no reason why Maasin cannot prosper with its officials having the passion to serve.
For her part, Romualdez’s wife Cristina Gonzales-Romualdez ,a former actress,expressed her appreciation for the invitation. She also said that what divide the people of Leyte Island is the mountain ranges-with those facing Bohol and Cebu speak the Cebuano language and those facing Samar speak the Waray-Waray.Nonetheless, she implied that the two different languages of the inhabitants did not create a discordant barrier as long as mutual and diplomatic relationship is concern. She said she even talked to the incumbent Governor to be partners in tourism promotion of Leyte’s 2 provinces.
Governor Mercado with the assistance of Mayor Samaco has awarded plaques of appreciation to the honored guests Alfred and Cristina.
During the culmination day of the celebration, the City Government has given awards to the Most Outstanding Maasinhons from different endeavors to five individuals and one institution. 1)Marcelino Hanopol,Jr.-Assistsant Commissioner and COA Regional Director-Government Service;2)Dr.Clemencia Tan Montecillo-Humanitarian Service: providing services to migrate Filipino workers in Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates by putting up housing selttlement;3)Reynaldo C. Abris-Culture and Arts;4)Ryan David M. Sy-Sports Escellence;5)Andrew Sanchez-Music; 6)DYDM-AM-Public Affairs and Community Service.
Singers/Performers who provided entertainment to the thick crowd during intermissions were singer/songwriter Andrew Sanchez, Natasha Mae Resos, Carl Emmanuel K.Beja, Joane Cristey Maui T.Cepada, Quina Josel T.Dolauta, Reine S. Roa, Michael Mori, Irish S. Saavedra, Shana Kalyla Lutero, Shaina May Rodas and Collen Tanquizon.

New Generations Of Music Lovers Must Also Listen To The Songs/Music Of The Past

The new generations of music lovers, not only in the Philippines, but also in other countries of the world, must listen, not only the new songs but also the popular songs of yesteryears. They should not confine their listening/hearing only of the present and new songs. If the young music lovers of today who have also listened to the songs of Bob Marley, the original creator of reggae in the 1960s, they should as well listen to the songs and music of the past decades including instrumental pieces done in guitars and pianos.One of the famous guitar instrumentalists in the past who I liked was Chit Atkins.My uncles and aunts in Ozamis City,every now and then,used to play Atkins' pieces whenever they were relaxing or doing their things at home.
Bob Marley, who has passed away for several years now, has remained alive in the minds and hearts of those young generations who preferred to listen to his reggae songs, than the new albums of loud drumming from some bands.
Bands and soloists/singers whose songs and music would provide wide variety of tunes and melodies are worth listening to and learning to sing their songs. There are too many of them to mention their names that other popular bands and singers might slip in my tongue. However, I will try to recall as best as I could to give guidance to the younger generations of music lovers.
The singers here that I’m going to mention are not only the local talents but also British, Americans and other nationalities who have tasted popularity during their younger days. The singers here that I’m going to mention are either dead or alive.
Nevertheless, though singers/vocalists may have their destiny of death, their songs should not, and ought not to die with them. Their kind of songs can no longer be composed by any songwriter/composer of the present generation. Each songwriter, each composer or musician has a varied gift of doing music from decade to decade, and from past to the present era. This should be the main reason that full-blooded, real music lovers must listen to a wide variety of tunes and wide variety of songs. They should not be contented with listening only to the current hits.
The popular singers/bands that I’m going to mention here starts from the 1950s and up- down to memory lanes that I can recollect.

In the past when there was only AM radio, no TV channels and no FM,the announcers/disc jockeys who would always play new songs on the air for its promotions to gain familiarity and popularity to the listeners would always mentioned the names of the singers or bands of each song after it would be played. They would repeat the mentioning of the names of the singers or bands that they have been playing on the air for several weeks. After 2 or three weeks of regular enunciations of the singers and bands’ names, they would stop the announcing and just played it from time to time. This system has had helped me in remembering the names of some singers and bands in the past. This is aside from my curiosity and the enthusiasm of asking records sellers at the bar or store bearing the names of the singers or bands whose songs I have come to like.
I have also learned later that when I was a kid some of the songs that I have listened and come to like and love them were not only the songs of the 1950s but also the songs in the 1930s and 1940s.
Enjoy and ride on the trip to memory lanes of songs and music and entertain ourselves with the “newly-discovered” treasures of entertainment which probably you did not yet heard during the previous years; except when I have opened to you the gate to discover them hidden under the shelves of oblivion or covered by dust in your parents’ closets or at the many radio stations that keep them, but did not play them because their were no requests to play. But how can you make a request to play any kind of songs if you do not know the title and the name of the singer who sang it? Playing regularly all the songs available inside a radio station without waiting for any request from any listener would make them expose and be recognized and appreciated by all the music lovers and listeners.

This is extremely important to do aside from listening also to the classical music of Mozart, Beethoven,Joseph Haydn and their contemporaries. New Generations Of Music Lovers Must Also Listen To The Songs/Music Of The Past

The new generations of music lovers, not only in the Philippines, but also in other countries of the world, must listen, not only the new songs but also the popular songs of yesteryears. They should not confine their listening/hearing only of the present and new songs. If the young music lovers of today who have also listened to the songs of Bob Marley, the original creator of reggae in the 1960s, they should as well listen to the songs and music of the past decades including instrumental pieces done in guitars and pianos.One of the famous guitar instrumentalists in the past who I liked was Chit Atkins.My uncles and aunts in Ozamis City,every now and then,used to play Atkins' pieces whenever they were relaxing or doing their things at home.
Bob Marley, who has passed away for several years now, has remained alive in the minds and hearts of those young generations who preferred to listen to his reggae songs, than the new albums of loud drumming from some bands.
Bands and soloists/singers whose songs and music would provide wide variety of tunes and melodies are worth listening to and learning to sing their songs. There are too many of them to mention their names that other popular bands and singers might slip in my tongue. However, I will try to recall as best as I could to give guidance to the younger generations of music lovers.
The singers here that I’m going to mention are not only the local talents but also British, Americans and other nationalities who have tasted popularity during their younger days. The singers here that I’m going to mention are either dead or alive.
Nevertheless, though singers/vocalists may have their destiny of death, their songs should not, and ought not to die with them. Their kind of songs can no longer be composed by any songwriter/composer of the present generation. Each songwriter, each composer or musician has a varied gift of doing music from decade to decade, and from past to the present era. This should be the main reason that full-blooded, real music lovers must listen to a wide variety of tunes and wide variety of songs. They should not be contented with listening only to the current hits.
The popular singers/bands that I’m going to mention here starts from the 1950s and up- down to memory lanes that I can recollect.

SP Approves Appropriation Of P9.4M Plus For Various Projects

Maasin City, Southern Leyte-The Sangguniang Panlalawigan during its recent session held at the provincial capitol here has approved the appropriation of a total P9, 402,055.45 for various projects in different areas of the province.
The places where the funds for projects were intended involved Maasin, Libagon, Hinundayan, San Francisco and Pintuyan.
For Maasin projects are the construction of Provincial Disaster Management Center’s parking area with funds of P397, 935.45.This is chargeable against the Disaster Management CY 2010 funds. Another P954, 000.00 is for the construction of access road in brgy.Badiang, chargeable against the 2010 funds.
The approvals of Maasin’s projects were acted upon by SP ex-Officio member Nacional V. Mercado and seconded by Cesar Rey.
The municipality of Libagon has also two projects. The construction of Biasong-Palayan farm-to-market road worth P1, 500,000.00, which was taken from the Unappropriated Balances of Supplemental Budget No.3 CY 2010.
The other one is the construction of Bogasong Communal Irrigation project with an appropriation of P2, 520,000.00, which is chargeable against the 20% Economic Development Fund for FY 2010 marked “Irrigation Development and Rehabilitation”. The action for the approval was moved by SP Albert Esclamado and seconded by SP Agustin Escaño, Jr.
Hinundayan town has likewise 2 projects. An amount of P1, 500,000.00 was appropriated as the provincial government’s 10 percent counterpart for the rehabilitation of Sagbok-Plaridel farm-to-market road under resolution .no. 389-s.2010.
The other one has funds of P950, 000.00 for Cogon-Biasong communal irrigation project chargeable against the Economic Development Fund for Fiscal Year 2010 thru resolution.no.391-s.2010.Hinundayn’s projects approval was moved by Chairman Committee on Finance and Appropriation SP Jason Calva.
For San Francisco municipality in the Panaon Island, funds of P684,120.00 was appropriated as payments for PEO’s Equipment Services for the construction of access road leading to Marayag Cemetery in brgy.Marayag.This is chargeable against the Special Project Appropriation 2010 Aid to Barangays and Municipalities for infra projects.

Cervantes Advises Motorists To Always Wear Their Helmets When Travelling

Maasin City, Southern Leyte-Traffic Officer Donato B. Cervantes here has advised all motorists to wear always their standard helmets (not substandard helmets that are only bought for compliance purposes but cannot actually protect their heads) to save them, particularly their precious heads, from serious injuries during the occurrence of unpredictable accidents.
The police officer‘s advise came up following a road accident that happened in brgy.Kahagnaan, Matalom,Leyte recently involving a motorcycle and a passenger bus that caused sudden death to a security guard of the Saint Joseph College. The victim-security guard during investigation was discovered to have had brought his racing helmet but did not wear it and simply slung it on his shoulder.
The victim was identified as Segundo Alsola Disalles, 39 years old, married, a residence of brgy. Kahagnaan of the aforesaid municipality. Kahagnaan is the last barangay under the jurisdiction of Matalom, Leyte and nearest to Maasin’s barangy of Panan-awan.
The bus driver was identified as Camilo Jurban Miking, 39 years old, married, and a resident of Maasin City. The bus named Honor was owned by Honorato Paloma of brgy,Tagnipa.
SPO1 Cervantes in an interview disclosed that the victim had left his home at past 7:00 a.m. to report for duty at the Saint Joseph College. He was driving in high speed akin to that of the bus driver and met at a curved road in brgy.Kahagnaan.
The two vehicles were running in opposite directions: the motorcycle driver towards Maasin, while the passenger bus was bound for Silago en route to Bato, Leyte to get more additional passengers.
While maneuvering in a curved road, he said, Disalles tried to slow down by pressing his foot on the break, but it skidded due to rain and his motorcycle collided with the bus, hitting the half part of the bus’s body. He was thrown away and hit on the concrete pavement.
The security guard suffered serious injuries on his left leg and left shoulder, he said. It was so painful to move and his head was injured. He was then rushed to the provincial hospital for emergency treatment.However, the victim did not survive, Cervantes said,, and died thirty minutes later at the emergency room.
According to the nurse-on-duty Vena Malasaga Uy, the victim-security guard died of internal (brain) hemorrhage as diagnosed by the attending physician Dr. Ferylou Miel.
The police officer further said that after the victim’s body was brought to the morgue, a representative of the owner of the passenger bus had talked to the victim’s wife Jocelyn, 36 years old, at the hospital for an amicable settlement of the case.
The traffic investigator moreover said that an undisclosed amount of cash money was given to her. .The victim’s remains were then brought to St.Peter Funeral Homes in brgy. Pasay for embalmment prior to moving it to Kahagnaan.

My name is Quirico Monte de Ramos Gorpido, Jr. I was born in ST.Bernard,Southern Leyte, but I grew up in Ozamis City,Misamis Occidental,Mindanao,where my maternal grandmother, Marcela L. Almendras (deceased) has decided to move there (where her younger brother Lolo Jose was living) together with the whole family and settled there until her demise.
Yours truly is a product of combination of different groups of Filipinos indisputably dominated by their respective inherent Mother Tongues. My mother Lourdes Almendras Monte de Ramos (deceased) who is from Southern Leyte speaks Cebuano. My father Quirico Siervo Gorpido, Sr.(deceased) speaks Waray-Waray and hails from Northern Samar. My mestiza maternal grandmother Marcela L. Almendras (deceased), a half-Spaniard has her roots in Ilocos Norte. My maternal grandfather, Tomas C. Monte de Ramos (deceased) is also from Southern Leyte.
I studied in grades one and two at the Misamis Institute, later, re-named Misamis College (when I was in high school).Sometime in the 1980s, it changed its status to Misamis University.
However, I studied in grades three and four in St.Bernard when my mother, who became an early widow, has decided to move to the place together with my younger brother Emmanuel. After finishing the two level grades, we received a telegram instructing us to go back to Ozamis because Lola Ilang has died. There I studied in grades five and six at the Ozamis City Central School, where one of my classmates, a son of a medical practitioner, Artemio Tuaño Engracia,Jr.,(he was also one of my classmates in high school at the Immaculate Conception College of the same place), later a UP-graduate Journalism student, now promoted as news editor at the Philippine Daily Inquirer, after serving as the paper’s one of its Sportswriters .
Four years after I graduated in high school at the Immaculate Conception College in Ozamis City as a working student, I decided to go to Manila to see the place and to look for a job. I have experienced working different manual jobs until I was able to work in 2 private companies:1)at the Communication Foundation For Asia in Sta.Mesa,Manila and 2)at Merck,Inc,located at Salcedo Village, Makati City. Here in Maasin City, my base,I was once working at the Department of Environment and Natural Resources(DENR) which holds its office at the Capitol Site, where the Provincial Capitol is also located, for more than a year.
While living in Metro Manila I have enrolled as a self-supporting student at ICS for a home study course in journalism. Nevertheless, at the time I have lost my job, I was forced to stop. Although a journalism undergraduate, I was and I’m practicing what I have learned in my study.
For many years I was a correspondent to the Tacloban-based regional weekly, The Reporter, whose founder was a Maasinhon by the name of Agustin “Guz” Cerro Arnaiz, Sr.(deceased).It has its Maasin Branch office in brgy.Mantahan. But it closed shop after 34 years of serving the public.Recently, however,it was revived by one of his daughters on an online edition only.
Later I became a correspondent to other newspapers one after the other also for several years. I was a former correspondent to three Cebu-based newspapers: Visayan Express (now defunct), The Freeman and the Cebu Daily News.In Maasin City I also served as a correspondent to the Southern Leyte Times,which started its maiden issue sometime either during the month of August 1998 or August 1999. In Tacloban City I was also a former correspondent/news contributor to the weekly Tribune for three years and one year for the Leyte Samar Daily Express.
After I have learned little basic lessons in computer in 2007, thru the sponsorship of a kind, generous and good standing businessman, I applied again as a Correspondent at the Leyte Samar Daily Express during the last week of November 2007 by calling its Editor-In-Chief Vicente S. Labro. He then referred my application call to the publisher/owner, Dalmacio C. Grafil who accepted and approved my application.

This blog will and shall contain miscellaneous articles: news stories, opinion/commentary articles, feature stories, anecdotes, personal and impersonal essays, other writings and most probably some news pictures and other pictures consider relevant by yours truly, after I can save some amount of money in the future more enough to buy a digital camera.

I have experienced working different manual jobs until I was able to work in 2 private companies:1)at the Communication Foundation For Asia in Sta.Mesa,Manila and 2)at Merck,Inc,located at Salcedo Village, Makati City. Here in Maasin City, my base,I was once working at the Department of Environment and Natural Resources(DENR) which holds its office at the Capitol Site, where the Provincial Capitol is also located, for more than a year.
While living in Metro Manila I have enrolled as a self-supporting student at ICS for a home study course in journalism. Nevertheless, at the time I have lost my job, I was forced to stop. Although a journalism undergraduate, I was and I’m practicing what I have learned in my study.
For many years I was a correspondent to the Tacloban-based regional weekly, The Reporter, whose founder was a Maasinhon by the name of Agustin “Guz” Cerro Arnaiz, Sr.(deceased).It has its Maasin Branch office in brgy.Mantahan. But it closed shop after 34 years of serving the public.Recently, however,it was revived by one of his daughters on an online edition only.
Later I became a correspondent to other newspapers one after the other also for several years. I was a former correspondent to three Cebu-based newspapers: Visayan Express (now defunct), The Freeman and the Cebu Daily News.In Maasin City I also served as a correspondent to the Southern Leyte Times,which started its maiden issue sometime either during the month of August 1998 or August 1999. In Tacloban City I was also a former correspondent/news contributor to the weekly Tribune for three years and one year for the Leyte Samar Daily Express.
After I have learned little basic lessons in computer in 2007, thru the sponsorship of a kind, generous and good standing businessman, I applied again as a Correspondent at the Leyte Samar Daily Express during the last week of November 2007 by calling its Editor-In-Chief Vicente S. Labro. He then referred my application call to the publisher/owner, Dalmacio C. Grafil who accepted and approved my application.

Pyrite Chock: An Essential Protective Device For All Radio Stations-Saratan

Maasin City, Southern Leyte-Pyrite Chock, a blocking device of destructive electrical discharged from a lightning strike, is an essential invention needed for the protection of all radio stations in the country, either AMs or FMs.
This was the disclosure of Gaudencio “Jun” Saratan,a licensed radio operator who was once working at a local radio station DYDM.He is now working at the Saint Joseph College here in this ten-year-old small city.
The recent revelation of this piece of blocking device that would protect any stations from more damages from lightning strike cropped up when a transmitter of a newly-launched music station Viper FM in brgy. Ichon, Macrohon was allegedly hit by a lightning bolt sometime in June 2010.
This was also the day, Monday, when a cogon-roofed resthouse in brgy.Maria Clara owned by Christopher Plateros was burned when a fireball emanating from a lightning passed by it before hitting a coconut tree nearby into halves, as revealed by Maria Clara Chief Tanod Vicente Fernandez.
The intuition to verify an unofficial report received by a salesboy- friend at Lola Edad Beach Resort from one of Saludo Ice Plant workers, has urged this reporter to ask Chito Saludo, Viper FM’s Manager. However, for clarification he informed that the music station’s transmitter was safe and that it was the power source (transformer) installed by the SOLECO linemen that was hit by the lightning strike.
“After the lightning hit the transformer”, he said,” its electrical discharged ran towards the transmitter and damaged some of its parts”. Heard in the past that there exist an anti-lightning rod that would protect a radio transmitter from a lightning strike, I asked Jun Saratan if there really exist such kind of an invention, which I have not seen even once.
The licensed radio operator instead explained that the so-called anti-lightning rod is actually an 8 feet long, thumb-size rod made of copper called lightning arrester. He said that this device would be placed at the highest point of the radio station’s transmitter with a wire connection down to the ground.
Nevertheless, that is not enough, he said, saying that there’s another essential device that needs to be installed in wire connections which he called “pyrite chock” (mistakenly typed recently in a published report as “pyrite soap”).
He disclosed that “pyrite chock” is an invention from Germany and the USA that would block a destructive electrical discharged emanating from a lightning that would hit a transformer or any part of the wire connections in a radio station. “The installation of a pyrite chock in one, two or three wire connections”, he explained, “will block the destructive flow of electrical discharged from a lightning strike, thus minimizing its damaging effects to a certain radio station’s equipments. It is also of vital importance that if there are two or three wire connections towards the direction of the transmitter and two or three wire connections towards the radio station’s booth, then each wire connection should have a pyrite chock installed. The installation of this blocking device (isingsing ra na,a Cebuano statement uttered by Saratan,which is understandable among the Cebuano-speaking people, on how to install a pyrite chock on a wire connection),he said, should be placed just a few inches away from the power source.
Asked how he came to know about this important device or gadget, he divulged while he was working at DYDM he was one of those licensed radio operators or technicians who were sent to DZRH-Manila where a German expert has conducted a seminar on the importance of installing pyrite chock in all radio stations of the country.
Queried further if all licensed radio operators have the knowledge about the aforesaid device, he said that only those who were lucky to have attended such kind of seminar and that this gadget is not available in the Philippines, but only in Germany and the USA. It can be ordered, he said.
Saratan moreover implied, that if the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) officials who inspected Viper FM last year to see if the music station has met the requirements, did not forget to advise Viper FM’s management, or that Chito Saludo himself knows the necessary essentiality of installing pyrite chocks in all the wire connections, then the transmitter erected atop a nearby hill, would not be damaged.
